How to Pack & Move Your Plants Safely

Houseplants are as delicate as dinnerware. Here's how to keep them alive and thriving through a move.

Plants are living things, and a move is hard on them — broken stems, spilled soil, and a few days in the dark can leave a healthy plant struggling. With a little prep, though, most houseplants travel just fine. Here's how our crew handles them.

Watch the video above, then follow the checklist below.

The plant-moving checklist

  • Water plants a day or two before — moist, not soggy, soil travels best.
  • Move plants into lightweight plastic pots before the move if they're in heavy ceramic.
  • Wrap large leafy plants loosely in paper or a sheet to protect the foliage.
  • Pack pots snugly in boxes so they can't tip, and keep them upright the whole way.
  • Never leave plants in a hot or freezing vehicle — transport them in the cab if you can.
