Plants are living things, and a move is hard on them — broken stems, spilled soil, and a few days in the dark can leave a healthy plant struggling. With a little prep, though, most houseplants travel just fine. Here's how our crew handles them.

The plant-moving checklist
- Water plants a day or two before — moist, not soggy, soil travels best.
- Move plants into lightweight plastic pots before the move if they're in heavy ceramic.
- Wrap large leafy plants loosely in paper or a sheet to protect the foliage.
- Pack pots snugly in boxes so they can't tip, and keep them upright the whole way.
- Never leave plants in a hot or freezing vehicle — transport them in the cab if you can.
