How to Pack Dinner Plates for Moving

Most people instinctively stack dinner plates flat in a box — and that's exactly how they get chipped and cracked. Stacked flat, the weight of the plates on top presses down on the ones below, and one bump on the road is all it takes. The professional fix is simple: pack them on edge, like records in a crate.

The professional plate-packing checklist

  • Always pack plates standing on their edge — never flat-stacked.
  • Wrap each plate individually in packing paper before boxing.
  • Use a sturdy double-walled box for heavy dishware sets.
  • Pad the bottom and sides of the box with crumpled paper.
  • Label the box "FRAGILE — This Side Up" so it's never laid down.
